How Can I Keep Cave Spiders from Climbing?

  • #1 Dec 29, 2011

I'm working on a cave spider farm, and I got it all working and everything, except for the fact that they can climb back up the area they just fell through, which backs up the whole thing. Is there any method of keeping them from climbing in a 1x1 hole?

    I don't think so. ):

Im not 100% sure but I don't think they can climb glass, can anyone confirm this?

I've tried glass, halfslabs, open fencegates, and signs so far (the fencegates and the signs were inside the tunnel though, not on the sides)

Try running a current of water from about 5 blocks above the hole. The constant flow of water through the hole might push the spiders down.

    Hmmm....
    Water will still work.
It may leave them slightly harmed but not entirely dead.

I tried having water midway down the tube, and have it flow down 3 blocks, then hit a sign, that way they would go through the water and fall through unharmed. But then they just climbed the walls up to the water and swam to the top of the water and climbed all the way up.

Put a trapdoor on it. Have it close when the spider goes down through it.

make it so your collection point (i.e. where you stand while waiting for the mobs to build up) is directly below the 1x1 hole. Have something like a fence so they can see you and and naturally gravitate towards you. This way you would be safe from harm.

    One word:
    Glass

Somehow glass walls will keep mobs from swimming up... Dont ask me how it works but its the only way I could get my grinder to work... Convincing them to dive can be a problem though...

If you have a 1x1 hole, water is pretty much the only thing you can use. I don't know if it would work, but have you tried making the walls of the tube out of soul sand?

I don't think he even has this problem any more, since I just noticed this thread is from 2011...
